In a country where less than 10% of licensed drivers are women, a quiet revolution is happening on India's roads. Women are stepping behind the wheel as ride-hailing drivers — challenging societal norms, achieving financial independence, and making the ride experience better for everyone.
Breaking the Barrier
For decades, driving professionally was considered exclusively a man's job in India. But the gig economy and ride-hailing apps have opened new doors. Women from diverse backgrounds — homemakers, single mothers, college students, and professionals seeking flexibility — are discovering that the driver's seat can be a powerful place.
"When I told my family I wanted to drive for a ride-hailing app, they thought I was joking. Now, I'm the highest earner in my family. Nobody's laughing anymore." — Priya Devi, Zrido Car Driver, Bangalore
Priya's Journey
Priya Devi, 34, is a single mother of two from Bangalore. After her husband passed away, she struggled to make ends meet with a factory job that paid ₹12,000/month. A friend suggested she try driving.
"I was scared at first. I had a license but hadn't driven much. I practiced for two weeks, then signed up on a ride-hailing platform," she recalls.
On her first platform, Priya earned ₹25,000/month — but after 30% commission, she took home only ₹17,500. When she switched to Zrido, everything changed.
"Zero commission means I keep everything. I'm now earning ₹45,000-₹50,000/month. My kids go to a good school. I'm saving money. I feel proud."
Sunita: The Night Rider
Sunita Sharma, 28, drives the night shift in Mumbai — a slot most drivers avoid. But for Sunita, it works perfectly.
"I study during the day and drive at night. The roads are quieter, the rides are longer, and I earn more per hour. Zrido's night safety features — SOS button, auto ride sharing, route monitoring — give me confidence."
Sunita is putting herself through a nursing degree with her Zrido earnings. "In two years, I'll be a nurse. But even then, I might keep driving weekends — I love the independence."
Why Women Drivers Matter
The presence of women drivers benefits the entire ride-hailing ecosystem:
- Safety for women riders: Many women riders feel more comfortable with women drivers, especially at night
- Better service ratings: Studies show women drivers consistently receive higher service ratings from passengers
- Safer driving: Insurance data shows women drivers have fewer accidents and traffic violations
- Economic empowerment: Every woman driver supports an average of 4-5 family members
- Inspiration: One woman driver inspires others in her community to consider driving
How Zrido Supports Women Drivers
At Zrido, we've built specific features and programs to make driving safer and more accessible for women:

Safety toolkit: Enhanced SOS, auto ride sharing, route monitoring
Flexible hours: Choose when to drive — day, evening, or night
Support community: WhatsApp groups for women drivers to connect and support each other
Zero commission: Every rupee earned goes to the driver — especially important for women who are often primary breadwinners
The Road Ahead
Currently, women make up about 5% of Zrido's driver base — but we're working to increase that to 15% by 2027. We're partnering with women's self-help groups, offering free driving training programs, and creating awareness campaigns in communities.
The goal isn't just to have more women drivers. It's to create a ride-hailing ecosystem where women — as drivers and riders — feel safe, valued, and empowered.
Because when women drive, everyone moves forward.
